The famous author Maria Shriver wrote that “having kids—the responsibility of rearing good, kind, ethical, responsible human beings—is the biggest job anyone can embark on.” Some moms take on other jobs too. Whether to be able to spend more time with their families or because of the requirements of specific work positions, they choose to work from home.

If you are one of those brave, hardworking women, you shouldn’t be forced to sacrifice either of these vital duties by working in an area cluttered with toys and being interrupted all the time. So, here are some tips that will help you create a comfortable, chic and well-organized home office.

Paint it productively

If you have the chance to paint the walls of your home office or the room where your working station is situated, you should pay attention to the color you choose, because it can affect your performance. According to color psychology, highly-saturated shades evoke energy, and low-saturated hues promote serenity. By combining the two, you will create a space that inspires you to do your best. Some of the most recommended colors for an office are blue, green, white and other neutrals.

Keep the clutter at bay

It is enough that you have to step on a Lego each time you walk into your kids’ bedroom, you don’t have to do the same in your office. Whether your working area is a corner of the living room or a dedicated office, you need to eliminate the junk and have an effective filing system that includes shelving units to hold books, folders for the paperwork and a desk with drawers to hide away the remaining items. Decorative baskets and boxes can also help with easier access and storage.

Here are a few organization tips that will make de-cluttering easier:

● Organize cords by color with washi tape and toilet paper tubes.
● Use a giant roll of paper to keep track of your tasks.
● Don’t use paper when you don’t have to. Stick to cloud storage.
● Attach clip-on baskets for extra storage.

Green it up

A study on the long-term impacts of plants in an office environment found that the presence of plants in the office increases productivity by 15 percent. Beyond that, plants are beneficial for one’s mood, focus and the quality of indoor air. Introducing them to your office will also work wonders when it comes to aesthetics. Fresh flowers and house plants will instantly give the space a warmer and fresher look that can only be compared with a bright spring day.

Make it cozy

Regardless of how many hours you spend working a day, you should make each of them comfortable and productive. You will do that by choosing an ergonomic chair and a desk of appropriate height, which prevents your hands from getting tired.

It would be useful to have a classy leather sofa for taking a break from long hours, or if your kids are allowed to join you during short pauses. If you don’t have enough room for a sofa, you can rest with an armchair and an ottoman, to raise your feet up. A furry area rug will make the space cozier, visually and practically.

Illuminate it

Proper lighting is vital for every room, and particularly for the office. Working in the dark can cause eye strain and make performing your tasks in time nearly impossible. Of course, it would be best to have as much natural light as possible, because it promotes better focus, but a full-spectrum overhead fixture will do the trick. However, you will have to use additional small lights as well.

Personalize it

While it is crucial to maintaining a clean and clutter-free working area, you should be aware that this is still a “home office” and not some cubicle in a large corporate building. Here you are allowed to beautify the space by bringing in the items you love and that reflect your personal style.

Add a dash of color with accessories (e.g., vase, pretty throw pillows or a lamp), hang your favorite artwork on the wall or display a motivational poster in the style of “hang in there, kitty.” Include things that keep you happy and motivated, like your kids’ drawings or photographs and travel souvenirs.

Working from home has its challenges, some of them being the lack of privacy and organization-related trinkets. However, it also comes with a number of perks, such as being able to design the home office at your will. These tips will help you create a working station you deserve.
