A boiler is a system in your house that tends to always stay in the background. And there are even times that you might forget that it’s there. That is until it breaks down. Suddenly, you are stressing over being cold and having to deal with icy water. If you are having problems with your Baxi Boiler system an error code will appear on its indicator display with an equivalent auto diagnosis on the possible issue.

This article is a Baxi Boiler troubleshooting guide put together with help from these troubleshooting boiler codes by Easy Boiler Company that will serve as a quick and helpful reference to the common problems of your boiler system. Along with it are our suggestions on how you can fix them yourself. Or, you may opt to call your boiler engineer to have him do a complete check-up, as well as the necessary repairs.

Baxi Boiler Troubleshooting Guide

Issue:

Frozen Condensate Pipe (Error Code: E133 and E28)

A condensate pipe is a white plastic pipe coming out from the bottom of the boiler. It transports wastewater and waste gas away from the system. It is then drained outside, causing the tube to become vulnerable to freezing. And when it freezes, it prevents your boiler from working correctly. Consequently, unable to produce heat.

Fix:

You can thaw the condensate pipe by pouring warm water over it, and it should solve the problem.

Issue:

Water Leak (Error Code: H.02-.06, 118)

If you find a puddle of water forming or may already have formed under your boiler, this could be caused by any one of several problems. It could be a broken internal component such as a faulty pressure valve or burst pump seal.

Fix:

If it’s an older Baxi boiler, you may have to have the whole thing replaced. Otherwise, you will have to call your Gas Safe engineer to check and fix the problem for you. Leaks are known to cause major issues if misdiagnosed or not handled properly.

Issue:

Low Boiler Pressure (Error Code: E199, Pressure Indicator under 1 bar)

Your normal boiler pressure is around 1.5 bars, and if it is below 1, then the pressure is too low. Conversely, if the pressure is above 2.5, then it is too high.

Suggested Fix:

After verifying that a leak is not the problem, try these steps to repressurise your boiler.

1.Make sure that your boiler is cool before doing anything.

2.Locate the filling loop – a metal hose attached to valves on both ends.

3.Attach the filling loop to your system and make sure they are secured

4.Open the valves to your filling loop to let the water from the main into your heating unit.

5.Monitor your pressure gauge allowing it to reach at least 1 bar. Do not over-pressurize.

6.After reaching 1 bar, stop the flow by turning off the valves.

7.Release the filling loop, then tighten the valves

8.Replace end caps to your boiler pipes.

If you feel confident enough, you may do these steps; otherwise, you may contact your heating engineer for proper diagnosis and repair.

Issue:

Boiler Not Igniting (Error Code: 3 red flashes or E133)

If you notice your Baxi Boiler is cutting out, you don’t have to worry about it too much since it is a known issue. But if it happens too often or doesn’t fire up at all, it may be a problem with its combustion chamber seals.

Fix:

Locate the seals and examine them closely. If they look worn out and show splits, you may already have to replace them. Once it is replaced and the problem stops, then you are good to go. If not, you will want to call your registered Gas Safe engineer.

Issue:

Boiler Lockout (Error Code:110, 160, E131,PCB,E168)

Note that this problem may also be relative to the “boiler not igniting issue“, which might be causing the lockout. This problem, however, is commonly due to overheating (110). It could also be a fan problem (160), a flue overheating (E131), or problems with the printed circuit board (PCB, E168).

Incidentally, if you are getting a 110 error or overheat, follow the steps below.

Fix:

1.Refer to your manual

2.Check pressure if it is between 1.0 and 2.0 (1.5). If it is below that range, top it up.

3.How to top-up: locate the pressure valve under your boiler (refer to your manual). Turn pressure valve to achieve normal pressure of 1.5

4.Monitor boiler heat by locating an orange gauge on the model 1Pf version. Also located somewhere near it is the red thermostat that will indicate any overheating. Find the reset button and press reset.

These steps should fix the problem, but if it persists, it is likely some other possible cause, as indicated above. Don’t hesitate to get in touch with your trusted boiler engineer right away.

Issue:

Banging Noise From the Boiler (Error Code: 128)

If you hear unusual loud noises from your burner and the 128 error code lights up, it is likely a broken burner. You will notice that the banging sound is not consistent, only when the boiler cycles on and off.

Fix:

For this type of issue, it won’t be safe to assume that the burner is the only problem. Once you get the 128 error, immediately contact your Gas Safe engineer to check the inside of the boiler. Allow him to make a proper diagnosis and replace the burner as necessary. In case you have an older version Baxi boiler, replacing the burner would cost you as much as replacing the whole thing.

So, it would make more sense to replace the entire boiler instead.

Issue:

No Hot Water (Error Code: E50, E133, E54)

A no hot water issue could be any of a multitude of problems with your boiler that involves the ff:

·Hot water NTC or Negative Temperature Coefficient (E50)

·Ignition problem (E133)

·Hot Water flow sensor fault (E54)

Fix:

It could also be a damaged airlock, a broken diaphragm, failed motorized valves, low water, or a thermostat problem. We recommend that you call your Gas Safe Engineer to do a complete and thorough check-up.

When is the Best Time to Replace my Baxi Boiler?

With regular annual servicing and the proper use and care of your Baxi Boiler, your heating system should last for about 10-15 years. After that, a replacement is recommended

Keep warm and stay safe.
